Okay, why have I been putting this off for so long? Other than the fact that it's been the most INSANE spring in my life (except for the one with the break-up, the senior recital, and the return to Jesus - okay, maybe that one was more insane, but in other ways). Anyway, I finally took the plunge, and it's easy as all get-out. Let that be a lesson to you, my children - don't put off till tomorrow the cliff over which you can plunge today. And land in a pile of
masa. Okay, that metaphor doesn't do much for me, but it's been a long 2010 already. The above picture is of my lovely new
tortilla press (what shall I name her? Marilla, perhaps?), lined with plastic so that her oily tinniness doesn't come off on the dough.

The dough, which I dreaded most, was the easiest. I decided not to measure, just to dump in some masa and wet it until it felt good and workable. I did this - and it worked. Crazy pants! Here's my left hand and the damp paper towel to keep it from drying out while I cook.

And here is (a rather unclear picture of) tortilla #2 in the skillet. I don't have a flat-bottomed
comal, and to be honest, I don't think I'll need one; the cast iron works no matter what, and I have 2 frying pans packed away of my own, plus this one of Mom's for here, so I'm set. Tortilla #1 was actually better, but I was so proud of it that I fed it to Mom and Dad before I thought of taking a picture - sorry, y'all; your loss, their gain.
Anyway, life is completely nuts right now, but not every part of falling down the rabbit hole can be immediately related!
I hope y'all are having a great spring! Despite much insanity, I sure am.
